Eligibility Requirements for Screenwriters

  • Age 18 or older.
  • Must use legal name on registration form, no pen names. Scripts submitted under a pen name will be immediately disqualified.
  • Must be a resident of Sarasota or Manatee County, and able to provide proof.
  • Submitted scripts must be original, and the sole property of the applicant(s).
  • All entries must be in English.
  • All entries must be properly formatted as a screenplay.
  • Screenplays must be between 3 and 15 pages in length.
  • There is a limit of 2 entries per writer.
  • You may submit a script once. You may not submit the same script more than once.
  • All entries must be in PDF format with a separate PDF Title page.
  • Under no circumstances will substitutions of either corrected pages or new drafts of the entry script be made. Scripts will not be returned.
  • If a submitted script becomes optioned, produced or purchased between the time of submission and the end of the judging period, that script will no longer be eligible.
  • *All screenwriter entrants must be amateurs, defined as having not been paid by another company or person to write a scripted feature film or scripted television episode.
  • Must be willing to work and able with creative advisors and one of the winning directors to develop the winning short film script during August 1-October 31, 2017.

Submissions procedure

  • Screenwriter must register on southwestfloridafilms.com as a screenwriter. (You may also register separately as a director.)
  • PDF script submissions will be sent to scriptcontest@southwestfloridafilms.com
  • You will receive a numbered receipt by email.

 

Genres and Adaptations

  • We accept all genres except animation or adult films.
  • We accept adapted screenplays. However, screenwriters must possess all rights to the source material or use source material in the public domain. Optioned material is not accepted. We reserve the right to ask for verification that you own all the rights to the source material of an adapted work. Failure to provide verification if requested will result in the screenplay becoming ineligible for our competition.
  • The scripts will be judged on Story, Characterization, Dialogue, Description, Clarity, and Originality.

  • Winners will be notified August 1, 2017

 

Ownership & Rights

  • All screenwriters who submit to the Sarasota Short Film Competition maintain the rights to their works.
  • Submitted screenplays are only accessible to the reader and judges. We do not distribute them publicly in any way.
  • We recommend registering your work with the Writer’s Guild of America, East and/or the Library of Congress Copyright office.
